Plain Chicken Broth

A simple broth recipe without spices and such. This is useful as a base for many recipes, including more sweet ones where you don't want onion and garlic ruining the desert.
  • Prep Time:
  • Cook Time:
  • Servings: 6 Quarts

Ingredients

  • (1 Pack (2.5-3.5 pounds)) Chicken Shells
  • (6 quarts) Water
  • (1 Tbs) Salt
  • (1 Tbs) Apple Cider Vinigar

Directions

This recipe is the base to our our healthy hot chocolate our kids drink.

For extra collagen, use one chicken shell and one pack of chicken feet (believe me it add so much richness to the broth).

  1. Place all ingredients in a large pot with a lid on high heat. As soon as it begins to simmer, cover with a lid and turn the heat down to low to maintain a simmer for 18-24 hours. Don't let it boil as this can give it an offensive taste.
  2. After 18-24 hours, remove all the solid ingredients with tongs or a slotted spoon. Discard.
  3. Strain your bone broth through a strainer lined with a thin hand towel or cheese cloth.
  4. Fill your jars you'll be keeping the broth in, leaving 2 inches from the top of the lid. Refrigerate overnight then move to the freezer for long term storage.

This broth will keep in the fridge up to 5 days. After that you'll need to freeze them.

Bonus note: you can save freezer space by condensing the broth. Simply simmer the finished, strained stock over medium heat with the lid off. Once the bone broth has reduced to around 1/3 of it's volume, it's sufficiently condensed for storage.
